Kilgore College Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) will partner with the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) by celebrating National Adult Education & Family Literacy Week Sept. 16-20.
Events during the week are scheduled to raise public awareness about the power of adult education and family literacy programs.
KC’s AEL program is committed to providing essential resources to help adults achieve their goals including the following:
- Earning a High School Equivalency Diploma: The program tackles the challenge faced by more than 30 million Americans who lack a high school diploma. Last year alone, Kilgore College AEL served 716 students with 100 graduating with their GED.
- Building Career Skills: In today’s job market, a strong foundation is crucial. AEL equips learners with the skills needed for career advancement, preparing them for postsecondary education or training.
- Language Learning Support: The program offers a lifeline for English Language Learners (ELLs), helping them improve their communication skills and integrate into the community.
- Family Literacy Programs: These programs create a learning environment for both adults and their young children, fostering basic skills development, English language acquisition, and strong parenting practices. This holistic approach aims to break the cycle of low literacy, education, and poverty.

Kilgore College AEL invites the community to participate in a week of themed events highlighting its services:
- Monday, Sept. 16: National GED Day
- Tuesday, Sept. 17: College and Career Future Focus Day
- Wednesday, Sept. 18: Community Resource Roundup Day
- Thursday, Sept. 19: Language Learning Lifeline for ELLs Day
