Upward Bound (UB) is a Federal grant program funded by the Department of Education and sponsored locally by Kilgore College. This free college preparatory program is designed to increase the rate at which participants complete high school, and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education (college/university).
Once our program reaches its target number, the program will be closed for the year. Additional applications will be kept on file for the current school year. Please make sure your application is completely filled in with the appropriate documents attached.
During UB’s six-week Summer Academy, students are provided instruction in math, laboratory science, composition, literature, and foreign language. Students also participate in cultural trips, community service activities, and visit college campuses.
Upward Bound program is a college preparatory program that encourages academic success in high school with the goal of obtaining a college degree.
There is no financial cost for students to participate in the program. The only cost is the student’s time and commitment to the program. All academic and program services provided to students, to include the six-week summer program, trips, and tutoring, are free. The federal government spends approximately $5,000 per student per year through UB grant funding. These funds go toward staff and teacher salaries, meals, transportation, academic programming, career and cultural activities, and college campus visits.
The UB Program serves 50 students each year.
Students can apply at any time. Most students begin the program as rising 9th graders or during their 9th grade year in high school. The Student and Parent applications are available online. Once our program reaches its target number, the program will be closed for the year. Additional applications will be kept on file for the current school year.
